Baidu DuSmart Speaker promo video

,

This is a commercial project which I made for Baidu, Inc.

The client wants me to design two different 3d scene for this video, with cartoonish style and animation to show this new product—the DuSmart Speaker is smart and not only can be people’s assistant in the life but also can provide a lot of leisure choice.

At the same time, this project only has a two-week tight time and a limited budget for me. After I did some research and made some test scenes, I decided to make this project using an open source 3d software named Blender.

The reason that I choose Blender,  to be more specific Blender2.8. Because it shipped with a real-time render engine called EEVEE. And some 3d artwork like the picture below only takes  5 to 10 seconds to render at 3k resolution,  and if I want to get the highest quality of that image, it only takes 30 seconds per frame. This is unbelievable when I used some traditional Ray-tracing render engines like V-ray or Arnold or even some render engine that boosted by GPU like Redshift before. To my point of view, I think EEVEE is kind of like the render engine that used in games. And it pushes the limits of those techniques which used in games, so we can make some awesome animation with a very little time and effort.

(*even with the volumetric light, motion blur and depth of filed, it rendered very fast.)

Here are some characters that I designed for this project:

Here is another scene that I created for this project.  Originally this scene is not my part of the job, and the department that takes charge of this scene runs into some problem, so they can not deliver the work on time. So I help them design this scene.

And I discovered some very interesting things during this process. I made this scene on my personal computer, only with a game graphic card. I can view this project in real-time,  and change the material and model in real-time. But the department that takes charge of this scene, they use Maya and traditional workflow, so they took a lot of time to test the rendering and the animation. The viewport is very slow even with the pure model without material. So I think blender2.8 definitely will help companies to speed up their workflow, and with some render engines like EEVEE, artists can express their idea faster and can make a lot of iteration of the artwork.
