Wasteland is an internal project created to showcase our Virtual Camera and Live Editing capabilities together with Unreal Engine 5.
This behind-the-scenes piece gives a glimpse into how our team produced a short cinematic sequence driven by our virtual production technology. The goal was to create an aggressive, action-packed car chase with intense, intimate, and cinematic camera angles focused on the pursuit between the vehicles.
My role on this project was to build the vehicle rigs and develop a custom VCAM system specifically designed for car chase shooting scenarios.
This project was also a stress test for the tech team. We wanted to see how much we could deliver within just a few days. It was my first time working with car rigs using Unreal Engine’s Chaos Vehicle system, and it turned out to be a very fun and valuable experience.
Here are some videos showing the rig in action.
I also customized our VCAM system to support several production-focused features:
- Dynamically attach the virtual camera to predefined locations on any vehicle
- Adjust the camera position within those predefined locations using a joystick
- Switch to a drone flying mode for aerial-style shots
- Display a mini-map for vehicle operators to see each other’s positions
- Set up a simple multiplayer session so multiple people could operate together, while only the host recorded the final animation data
